Having played all the way to the final map, I can tell you that no matter what spellbooks you have, if you don't know enough of how to play the game at the basic level you aren't going to win even with 3 star books. Each spellbook is simply an exchange you get for the curse you have to deal with, so you're mitigating your penalties. Spellcaster University includes a lot of content and a long learning curve. However, I will state that while the quality of the boon you gain each map can vary, the curses are consistent no matter what you do.
